The need for cyber security is growing even in embedded systems, and vulnerabilities found in shipped products are required to be fixed. However, while many open source communities, including the Linux Kernel, have provided security fixes, it is often observed that product developers are unable to leverage those fixes for their own embedded Linux-based products. What should we do to change such situations? The first part of this talk describes the challenges to keep your embedded Linux ready for security fixes. One of the challenges is to define appropriate update models and processes in combination with test automation and CI/CD. Another challenge is to minimize out-of-tree code that causes inconsistencies with the upstream ecosystem. The second part of this talk shows how EMLinux (Yocto-based embedded Linux environment) leverages the CIP (Civil Infrastructure Platform) kernel and Debian packages, as an actual example of providing continuous security fixes. Hiraku will also introduce contributions to the various open source communities (Linux LTS kernel, KernelCI and so on alongside CIP) made through the EMLinux development.
Hiraku Toyooka leads the development of EMLinux(Yocto-based embedded Linux environment) at Cybertrust Japan. He is also a maintainer of meta-emlinux and meta-debian-extended. In recent years, he has been contributing to CIP, especially for the automated testing environment. He previously... Read More →
