Grafana Labs supports a lot projects and communities; some under our own umbrella, some under other umbrellas like CNCF. With projects like Grafana (51,000 GitHub stars), Prometheus (44.300), and Loki(17,000), we're talking some of the largest projects of their kind on Earth. We will walk through the underlying strategy and the scaffolding of how these successful projects have thrive alongside their healthy and self-sustaining communities. While it may not be obvious from the outside, all of them follow the same basic outline, adapted to what the different projects need. This strategy is rooted in over twenty years of experience building communities. A large part of this experience was drawn from running the OpenProjects / freenode IRC network, again the largest of its kind, where everything from KDE to Ubuntu to Twitter to Reddit to Bitcoin and Wikipedia was started, and observing what worked for them, what didn't work, and how those communities evolved over time.
